Clavicle Fractures: Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Return to Sport

Recently two of my clients as well as renowned DH racer Amaury Pierron fractured a clavicle (collarbone). This lead me to put my knowledge on this common injury into an article to share with the MTB and BMX community.

Clavicle fractures are one of the most common injuries in mountain biking, particularly for downhill (DH) riders and BMX racers who experience high-impact crashes, it highlights just how common and serious clavicle fractures can be in the sport.

Injury recovery is a complex process that requires careful management through different healing phases. Transitioning between these phases—progressing from pain management to range of motion exercises, then strengthening, and finally sport-specific riding sessions—is key to optimizing recovery and ensuring long-term performance. Each stage of recovery is important to rebuild not just the injured area, but the entire body, so riders can return to full action safely and effectively.
