Spinal Cord Injuries in Mountain Biking

About a week ago the online magazine NSMB posted about a recent study on spinal cord injuries in mountain biking.

To say the least, the article created some controversy in the comments.

Some, attacking the motives of the researchers calling the study a piece of sensationalist fear mongering.

Others, taking a more calculated approach trying to pull some useful information from the study and discussing how it could be applied to our beloved sport.

With my background as an Athletic Therapist, having helped collect data for research on injury rates and mechanisms I recorded my thoughts on what this study actually tells us and what we can do to help our own risk of injury on the trail.

Reader, Let’s face it—this Alberta summer has been soggy. And while our loamy trails are normally a dream to ride, many are clay-based and turn into peanut butter when it rains. Riding them when saturated doesn’t just suck—it causes major trail damage that takes serious volunteer hours and dollars to fix. So, while we all want to ride, being a good trail steward means knowing when to say, “Not today, dirt.” But that doesn’t mean giving up your riding fitness or flow. Here are smart,...

In the end Amaury raced and placed 10th in the race. An amazing feat of determination even with all of the medical support he must have had! Amaury Pierron, one of the top riders in downhill racing, is reportedly looking to race this weekend despite suffering a fractured clavicle. His recovery has...
